Barwon Coast honours volunteer contributions at special event

Barwon Coast proudly hosted a celebration on Tuesday, 20 May, to recognise the outstanding contributions of local volunteers as part of National Volunteer Week 2025.

The annual event brought together representatives from nine local volunteer groups who contribute to the health, safety and enjoyment of the Barwon Coast – including Coastcare groups, EstuaryWatch, Friends of the Bluff, Friends of the Hooded Plover Bellarine, Friends of the Lobster Pot, the Foreshore Master Plan Community Reference Group, and local Surf Life Saving Clubs.

Held at the Ocean Grove Surf Life Saving Club, guests were welcomed with drinks and canapés, before hearing from Sandy Gatehouse, Chair of the Barwon Coast Committee of Management, who thanked volunteers for their passion and commitment.

“Volunteers are the heartbeat of our coastal community,” said Ms Gatehouse. “From conservation and education to safety and stewardship, your work ensures that the coast is cared for today and protected for future generations. National Volunteer Week is a chance to say thank you, and to celebrate the deep connections you create between people and place.”

This snapshot of the year’s achievements showcased the incredible diversity of work being done, from dune planting and community education to bird monitoring and coastal safety.

Guests then participated in a coastal quiz hosted by Mr Smith, encouraging collaboration and plenty of laughter among attendees. Prizes were awarded for the winning teams by Ms Gatehouse, and Gareth shared a message of thanks and admiration for the volunteer community from Alison Marchant MP, Member for Bellarine.

“Volunteers are the backbone of the Bellarine community, “ said Ms Marchant. “Strong communities don’t just happen – they are built by the people in this room tonight. Thank you for your dedication.”

The event closed with a group photo, thank you gifts for volunteers, and time for the group to connect, share stories, and reflect on the collective impact of volunteer work across the region.

Barwon Coast extends its sincere thanks to all volunteers, including those who were able to attend on the night and those whose quiet work continues throughout the year.

Whether caring for Country, educating the public, protecting biodiversity, or keeping people safe in and around the water, all volunteer contributions are vital, valued, and deeply appreciated.
