Wedge Street beach access upgrade now open!

Published on 8 April 2025

The upgraded Wedge Street (formerly 11W) beach access stairs and viewing platform in Ocean Grove are now officially open to the public, marking the completion of a significant coastal infrastructure project aimed at improving safety, accessibility, and the overall beach experience for the community and visitors.

Construction began in February and was completed in early April, approximately one week later than originally scheduled. During this time, the access point remained temporarily closed, with nearby beach access points available for use. We sincerely thank the community for their patience and understanding throughout the works.

The project, approved by the Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action (DEECA), includes a range of upgrades:

  • New beach access stairs designed for improved safety and durability
  • A purpose-built viewing platform featuring seating to enjoy scenic ocean views
  • Upgraded pedestrian track and fencing to enhance accessibility and user comfort.

These improvements were designed not only to enhance public access but also to address significant damage caused by previous tidal and storm events. Materials and construction methods were carefully selected to ensure minimal impact on the surrounding coastal environment, in line with DEECA’s guidelines and sustainable design principles.

The upgraded Wedge Street access point now offers a safer, more welcoming entry to the beach, along with a beautiful new space for rest and relaxation. Whether you’re heading to the sand or just stopping by for the view, we encourage everyone to explore and enjoy the new facilities.

This project was delivered with support from the Victorian Governments Coastal Protection and Risk Grants Program.

Further updates on coastal access and other improvement projects will continue to be shared on our website.
